Softork™
is a high performance
rotary shaft sealing system using advanced energised sealing
materials to provide flexibility and durability. Originally designed as a
cost effective solution
to problems with mechanical seals in high stress, high speed marine
installations, the system has widespread applications
where long life and low maintenance costs are required.
OVS
introduced Softork™
energised gland seals to applications where, for many years it had been the
accepted tenet that only precision-engineered mechanical seals could guarantee
the required performance. A re-think was needed in the world of powerful multi-engined
mega-yachts and other high-speed vessels where frequent seal replacement on
water jet pump shafts was inflating the already high running costs. The solution
was a system which used elastomeric cored energised seal rings and a friction
modified insert constructed from an entirely new reinforced PTFE compound at the
gland housing anchor points.
This modification to the housing mount
enables radial misalignment and radial movement of the shaft relative to the
structure to be accommodated and ensures that the seal remains in it's optimum
position during operation.
Originally designed for use with high speed shafts, Softork™
is also suitable for medium and low speed applications. The energised seal rings
have excellent thermal conductivity and low friction, leading to minimal power
absorption and longer life. The design not only reduces wear compared with other
seal types but the materials used also significantly inhibit the corrosion which
can be experienced with mechanical seals used in arduous operating conditions.
