A compact and reliable mechanical type seal utilising the latest material technologies to ensure a long service life even in the most arduous conditions. Primarily designed for inboard sealing of ‘open system’ water lubricated propeller shafts, it can also be used for outboard sealing of ‘closed systems’ and shaft sealing where there is a requirement for abrasion resistance and ease of repair, for example dredge pumps. The seal has static parts consisting of a housing, with integral flushing water inlet, containing a self-lubricating, seal face, split for ease of maintenance and an inflatable seal which allows servicing of the seal while the vessel is afloat. The rotating parts consist of a removable silicon carbide seal face, a holder which is sealed to the shaft with special O-rings, springs and a drive clamp with driving pins.
